About the new homepage

Thanks to the efforts of our web committee (Pam Burris, John Hasstedt, Chi Ming Hung, Chang Kee Jung, Dean Schamberger and Warren Siegel) and inputs from many others, we have a brand new and updated department homepage. While we've taken care to make the transition to the new homepage smooth and pleasant for everybody, there's bound to be some problems in the beginning, so we ask for your patience while we continue to improve things. The following are some Q&A about the new homepage.

Q: What's the correct URL for the new homepage?

The correct URL should be http://www.physics.sunysb.edu/Physics/, though http://www.physics.sunysb.edu/ also works. The old URL http://insti.physics.sunysb.edu/Physics/ will continue to work (at least for a while) but downloading will be quite a bit slower using this link. We suggest updating your bookmarks and links to point to http://www.physics.sunysb.edu/Physics/.

Q: The new homepage looks awful in my browser!

While we've tried to make the new homepage compatible with as many browsers as possible, some older and less-commonly-used browsers may not be compatible with the new pages. The new pages have been tested on the following browsers: Netscape (4.x and above), Mozilla, Firebird, Firefox, Internet Explorer (4.x and above), Opera6 (partially supported), Safari, Camino and OmniWeb. Other browsers may or may not work with the new pages. If your browser cannot display the new pages properly, please check that you have enabled javascript and stylesheet in your browser. If you're still experiencing problems, please send email to webmaster@www.physics.sunysb.edu . Please include information about the browser you're using, the version of your browser (usually under the Help->About menu), and details about the problems you're experiencing.

Q: Where is the old homepage?

The old homepage is accessible in http://www.physics.sunysb.edu/Physics/index2.html. Please be aware that it is no longer updated, and some links may be outdated or broken. We suggest you use the new homepage if possible.

Q: Why doesn't the width of the new pages scale with the browser width?

The new pages have a fixed content width so that the positioning of elements within the pages can be controlled with better precision. This is common practice for modern websites, e.g. CNN or BBC. For optimum viewing of the new pages, we suggest a browser width of around 700 pixels.

Q: How to avoid the top submenu items from changing accidentally by mouse-over?

We suggest mousing-over the desired top menu item, then move the mouse below the top menu and move to the desired submenu item. The submenu will remain visible even after your mouse has moved off the top menu, so you don't need to keep your mouse on the submenu while navigating to submenu items.

Q: How to get back to the department homepage?

by clicking on the "Physics & Astronomy" banner on top if it's there, or by clicking the link at the bottom of the page (if there's one).

Q: Where's the link to the university's homepage?

Click on the Stony Brook logo at the top left of the page.

Q: What does the favicon represent?

It's supposed to be a representation of Einstein...

Q: How do I report problems or make comments or suggestions about the new homepage?

Please send email to webmaster@www.physics.sunysb.edu . If you're reporting problems, please include info about the exact URL of the page(s) you have problem with, the browser you're using and the version number of your browser (usually under the Help->About menu), and details about the problem you experienced.
