Liquid Mirror Telescopes LZT and ALPACA
---
After a successful installation of the LZT∞ (Large Zenith Telescope) liquid mercury telescope in British Columbia (Paul Hickson who visited us in 2001-2 was the prime force behind LZT) and obtaining seeing-limited images despite the miserable weather conditions during the fall of 2004, the proposal for the next stage of large rotating liquid mirror telescopes (called ALPACA∞) has been selected as a joint Major Research Initiative proposal to NSF by Stony Brook and Columbia. ALPACA would be a single 8 meter mirror sited in northern Chile. The work to date has benefited from generous support from Stony Brook and Columbia University, and a major gift from SB alumnus David Acker.
