Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics, Quantum Electronics

[see our new Research Opportunities Brochure]

Optics and the optical sciences are among the most dynamic areas of physics. These topics have led to new fundamental insights into the study of matter, and its applications include communications, medicine, manufacturing, and even entertainment. At SUNY Stony Brook, research groups in departments including chemistry, electrical engineering, and the biological sciences are increasingly dependent on optical science and technology for furthering their missions. Long Island is host to several companies with optics as part or all of their business, including Northrup-Grumman and Symboltek.

A number of faculty in the Physics Department at Stony Brook share an interest in the optical sciences, and their laboratories offer research opportunities for levels of students.
